A Woman's Last Word

“She put my arm about her waist…made my cheek lie there.”

Porphyria’s Lover makes the woman appear to be in control; at least in control where love is concerned. She is the one causing the author to make movements and actions they may or may not have done voluntarily. . The woman is not painted in a good or happy life. Each version of her is an extreme – she’s unable to let go of something, she’s emotionally unstable, she kills or she’s murdered. Man, not so happy and lovey-dovey. She becomes a possession, something to be marveled at and should yet worship the man. Porphyria’s Lover has the man killing her by her own hair – a way to symbolize her death by her own pride and vanity? Or was he killing her so that no one else could have her?
