** Unemployed **

Women were not offered the same educational opportunities as their male counterparts.  They were able to study "domestic tasks" and, in some cases, could learn other subjects in order to pursue employment.  They were not able to study law or science as these were considered "male subject". Upper and middle-class women were not employed, whereas lower-class women were forced to provide for the family, especially should her husband be incapable of doing so.  Though she could sometimes find employment, she was in no way paid the same as a man doing the same job.  Very few respectable jobs were available to women, even in the middle classes.  If necessary daughters could be sent to act as teachers or governesses for wealthy families. though it was a competitive field.  The position of governess or teacher was not highly sought after, thought of, nor respected.  This job was used to get the women out of the home, receive some form of payment though not much, and use whatever little education they may have received.  Social circles did not leave much room for a governess to merit much attention or advancement.
