Upon her marriage, Victorian women gave everything she owned to be added into the property of her husband.  Even if the marriage ended in a divorce, the husband retained the property his wife brought into the marriage.  She would not receive much, if anything, upon the death of her father as only males could possess the property and legal rights to possessions.  Whatever income the wife brought into the home became the property of the husband, and she could not sign or enter into ay kind of contract without her husband's approval.  She was, however, not thrown into the fire by the male relatives.
